  • Investment = savings - your first year expenses
  • You do not change your investments at retirement

(c) Social security benefits are based on your salary prior to retirement. It's safest to plan on not receiving any social security as many financial experts say it is underfunded.
(d) What rate of return do you think you will get on your retirement savings? Use 3% for low risk investments like GIC's and up to 8-10% if you regularily invest in the markets.
(e) Inflation is the annual increase in the cost of living and it varies by year - what estimate would you like to use?
